Innovation, Diversity and Sustainable Development in Areas of Social Vulnerability

Organized by: Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters - John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies- University of Massachusetts Boston, USA and by Chair in Multiculturalism created through a national and international agreement among the University of São Paulo (Brazil), Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil), University of Pittsburgh (USA) and York University (Canada), this workshop focused on the concept of social vulnerability associated with a number of factors that bind the socio-economic, environmental, cultural and psychological connected to exposure of poorer social groups to risks in areas of environmental degradation and lacking of public policy. Social vulnerability refers both to these risks and to the lack of strategies for addressing them. This workshop aims to discuss strategies for the empowerment of residents in the areas of social vulnerability and the implementation of public policies with a sustainable basis, in such areas. 

We welcome interdisciplinary approaches and proposals presented by scholars, researchers, public policy makers, governmental representatives and Non-Governmental Organizations. 

Abstracts and papers will be accepted in Portuguese and English (no simultaneous translation will be provided during the event)

  • Abstracts (200 words); and, a Biographical sketch (150 words) should be sent as e-mail attachments (in Word format) to: multicultural@usp.br with copy to crscad@umb.edu

  • Notification of acceptance of peer-reviewed abstracts - April 30th, 2011
This workshop will be the starting point of an organization of a network of specialists interested in pursuing the discussion about all of these issues. We shall create a Virtual Forum for this purpose and host another Workshop in 2012, at the University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

  • Strategies for population empowerment and the elimination of humiliations connected to social vulnerability and/or gender, age, ethnic, race, sexual orientation and disabilities
  • Children and youth care and empowerment in areas of social vulnerability
  • Strategies for sustainable urbanization against flooding and other kind of disasters due to
  • climate changes or lack of public policies
  • Establishing indicators of social vulnerability and sustainable development
  • Strategies for fundraising to assist in the development of vulnerable areas before and after disasters
